Core Competencies Introduction
Throughout this portfolio, I will cover five core competencies that shape me as both a leader and an employee: project management, responsibility, strategic planning, empathy, and critical thinking. These competencies represent more than just individual skills; they reflect a combination of knowledge, experience, and performance that define effective leadership in real-world environments. As a military veteran, responsibility, critical thinking, and strategic planning have been foundational to my development, influencing how I approach decision-making, problem-solving, and accountability. In high-pressure environments where safety and mission success are non-negotiable, I learned to think quickly, act decisively, and maintain ownership over outcomes. These experiences directly translate into my professional life, where I continue to rely on structured thinking and disciplined execution to lead teams and complete complex tasks. As a result, these three competencies are not only aligned with my background but are also deeply embedded in how I define leadership and performance.
At the same time, I intentionally chose to focus on empathy as an area of growth to expand my leadership capabilities beyond my natural tendencies. My upbringing and military experience conditioned me to prioritize results and safety, often requiring me to set aside personal emotions in order to accomplish the mission. While this mindset has been effective in operational environments, I recognize that strong leadership also requires the ability to understand and support others on a personal level. Developing empathy allows me to better communicate with team members and create a more cohesive and motivated work environment. It challenges me to balance task-oriented leadership with people-oriented leadership, which is critical in today’s workplace. By intentionally strengthening this competency, I am working toward becoming a more well-rounded leader who can adapt to different situations and effectively lead diverse teams.
